Carbonated water
Scientific name: Carbonic acid
pH value: 3-4
Colour (Universal Indicator): Orange
Uses:
- Carbonated drinks
- Increase the alcoholic intake in cocktails
- Improves taste in drinks
- Mix with fruit juice
Properties:
- Dissolves well with water which creates carbonic acid
- Pressure is created to make carbonic acid
- Higher gas pressure and low temperature causes more gas to dissolve in water
History:
In 1767, Joseph Priestly first discovered a method of creating carbonated drinks infusing water with carbon dioxide. This method involved a bowl of water above a beer vat which the air covering the beer was known to kill mice suspended in the bowl of water. He found that the water had a pleasant taste and offered it to friends. In 1772, he published his discovery calling it "Impregnating Water with Fixer Air."
The discovery of the carbonated drinks from Joseph Priestly, inspired Johann Jacob Schweppes to open the Schweppes company in Geneva in 1783 and the founder of the company. He also developed a process to manufacture carbonated mineral water, based on the method by Joseph Prisetley.
